Who is Motherhood is Murder Host Valerie Kacian?
Welcome to Motherhood is Murder, a true crime podcast exploring criminal activity, criminal minds, and ways communities have created and can create safer places for us all to live.
So, who the heck am I? First and foremost, I am a writer. I have been writing about crime since I was very young. As a young novelist and lover of a good mystery and thriller book, I began exploring the topic of murder, relationships, and societal influences in my own writing. Most of these manuscripts went unpublished, but the spark of research and interest was just beginning.
In 1999, my daughter (and first child) was born. A series of unusual events began to happen in the town we lived. During that summer, there was a murder of child, a series of rapes, and a shoot-out with police in a residential neighborhood. I began to realize that crime was not just in the fiction I was reading and writing or sensational news articles. It was all around us, even in a small, seaside town in Massachusetts. This inspired me to write my first fully researched novel, The Ghosts of Carmen De Santo, which follows the investigation of a murder in a small town. I spend a full year researching forensics, took a course in forensic investigation and a course in writing a police procedural mystery. Thus, my own mystery novel was born.
Over the years (and two more kids later), I have always found myself heading down the proverbial rabbit hole to investigate local cases, reading about the mental health concerns of adolescents, exploring criminal activity and behavior. I am fascinated and often horrified by what I discover. I have also worked as an activist to provide safe gun legislation in Massachusetts. As a result of this work, I have come to realize that there are a number of organizations that are working very hard to keep us all a lot safer and to spread awareness about certain social issues that can lead to violence.
Thus, my 4th baby "Motherhood is Murder" has been born. I am hoping through this podcast, I can guide you in your own exploration of true crime cases and well as provide insight on how we can all make our communities safer.
